Why Recovery Matters in Rugby

Rugby is one of the few sports with a recovery research base built on the sport itself rather than borrowed from elsewhere, and there is a reason for that. A match combines repeated high-intensity running with forceful, blunt-force collisions, and the two together produce more muscle damage than either would alone.

A controlled study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise put rugby athletes through a simulated collision-sport protocol — two 30-minute bouts of intermittent sprinting with repeated tackling — then gave half of them a 20-minute cold water immersion and half a passive recovery. The immersion group recovered muscle strength, voluntary activation and contractile function faster, and reported less soreness.

The professional calendar is what makes that matter. Training commonly resumes 48 hours after a match, which is not long enough for that load to clear on its own. Our full guide to rugby recovery goes through the evidence in detail.

What the Evidence Does and Doesn’t Support

What the research supports What it doesn’t
Muscle function Faster return of strength and neuromuscular activation after collision-sport exercise It doesn’t stop the damage happening in the first place
Soreness Lower perceived soreness in the hours and days after a match It isn’t a substitute for sleep, food or time
Across a block Reduced fatigue and soreness through a three-week intensive training phase One session after the hardest game is the weakest version of this
Blood markers Reductions reported in the acute research, within 48 hours of exercise Not every trial finds a change, so judge it on how ready players are rather than on bloods

Ryan Casey on the Partnership

We are thrilled to partner with Munster Rugby, a team renowned for its dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence.

Said Ryan Casey, Founder of C11.

This partnership is particularly special for us, given our family connections to the province. It aligns perfectly with our vision to be present at every major sporting event worldwide, ensuring athletes at all levels have access to the recovery tools they need to succeed. We started C11 three years ago with just one pair of compression boots, driven by my passion for recovery methods developed during my own sporting career. To see it grow into a global business, now partnering with Munster Rugby, is a dream come true.

Munster Rugby on the Partnership

Speaking on the announcement, Dave Kavanagh, Munster Rugby Head of Commercial and Marketing commented:

Here at Munster Rugby, player welfare is always at the forefront of our values as a club. This opportunity with an innovative brand such as C11, allows the players to fully focus on their game, with the confidence that their recovery and wellness continues to be prioritised. We are delighted to welcome the team at C11 to the Munster Rugby family and we are excited to see the partnership grow.

From One Pair of Compression Boots

The partnership with Munster Rugby is a significant milestone for C11, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the recovery space. From humble beginnings in rural Kildare with just one pair of compression boots, C11 now operates internationally providing equipment and expertise at elite competitions around the world.

C11 is currently the official recovery supplier for the DP World Tour, Cricket Ireland and Basketball Ireland. Key partnerships also include Optimum Nutrition (performance nutrition supplier).

Our Basketball Ireland partnership works the same way: the mobile recovery room arrives at the venue, so recovery starts within minutes of the final whistle rather than whenever players can next find a facility.

The Athletes C11 Works With

C11 has a strong and growing presence on all major social media platforms, particularly Instagram. The company has collaborated with a number of high-profile athletes including Charlie Hall, Craig Casey, Paul Hughes (MMA fighter), Andrew Porter (Irish rugby player), Richard Mansell (English golfer) and Roman Langasque (French golfer).

Recovery Beyond the Pitch

Through this new partnership, C11 is further strengthening its reach among corporate clients and decision-makers across Ireland, the UK and beyond. While the brand resonates strongly with younger audiences, the focus is on engaging high-level corporate clients who are interested in offering C11’s elite equipment at wellness days or showcasing that they provide the same recovery tools used by world-class athletes like Rory McIlroy while competing on the DP World Tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does C11 provide to Munster Rugby?

Access to world-class recovery solutions to optimise performance and accelerate recovery, delivered through C11’s mobile recovery room: ice baths, compression boots, massage guns and planned meals brought to the club, event or training ground.

Does cold water immersion actually work for rugby players?

For specific outcomes, yes. Controlled research on rugby athletes has found cold water immersion speeds the recovery of muscle strength, voluntary activation and contractile function after collision-sport exercise, and reduces perceived soreness. Its effect on blood markers of muscle damage is less consistent.

Why does the 48-hour turnaround matter so much in rugby?

Training commonly resumes about 48 hours after a match, and research on rugby recovery notes that this may not give players enough time to recover naturally before the next physical demand. Structured recovery exists to close that gap.

Which other teams and events does C11 supply?

C11 is the official recovery supplier for the DP World Tour, Cricket Ireland and Basketball Ireland, and partners with Optimum Nutrition as performance nutrition supplier.

Can a club book the C11 Recovery Truck?

Yes. The mobile recovery room is available to clubs, competitions, corporate days and wellness activations, not only to professional teams.
